When teeth are infected, your dentist will perform a root canal to repair it. However, in situations where a tooth is too severely damaged for a root canal to be effective, or if the root canal fails, your dentist may refer you to an oral surgeon for a more useful procedure. An apicoectomy is a procedure that is used as a last effort to restore a tooth and avoid the need for an extraction.
Oral surgeons typically perform an apicoectomy after a root canal has already been attempted. They will make sure the tooth is not cracked or broken and then enter the root of the tooth to try to clear the infection. If you have been recommended to our office for an apicoectomy, we encourage you to watch the video below to hear more about the procedure and its benefits.
