Anesthesia options

Before an oral surgery, or any dental procedure, many patients express feeling anxiety. This is completely normal, and our surgical staff wants to ensure you feel as comfortable as possible for the duration of your procedure. We offer many anesthesia options and forms of sedation, and the method used often depends on your preference and the nature of the procedure.

Local anesthesia

A local anesthetic is administered in the area where surgery is performed and can be used in conjunction with other anesthetic options.

Intravenous (IV) sedation

IV sedation is administered through an intravenous line and allows the patient to remain semi-conscious and very comfortable throughout the procedure. The patient may or may not remember parts of the procedure. This option is commonly used in semi-invasive surgical procedures, such as bone grafting, and can also be used when patients experience a high level of anxiety.

General anesthesia

If you undergo an extensive procedure, such as facial trauma surgery or jaw reconstruction, you may undergo general anesthesia, which can be administered in our oral surgery office for your treatment.

Are oral surgeons qualified to administer anesthesia?

Yes. Oral surgeons complete extensive training and gain valuable experience performing anesthesia before they administer it for any oral surgery procedure. This training includes in-office anesthesia in specialty facilities as well as the administration of operating room anesthesia in hospitals, and includes the highest level of licensure for dental practitioners to offer anesthesia.
