Boise Oral Surgery & Dental Implant Center

Your dentist told you it is time to get your wisdom teeth removed and the fateful day is rapidly approaching. It is normal to feel nervous before any kind of surgery. The good thing is that wisdom teeth removal is a fairly simple procedure that can be done right in your oral surgeon’s office. A good way to reduce your anxiety is to understand what to expect the day of your procedure. Be as prepared as possible in order to make the day as simple as possible.

Before Surgery

You have already met with your oral surgeon to give your full medical history and medications. You discussed what will happen during the surgery and X-rays were taken so that the surgeon can know exactly what to expect.

Be sure to make arrangements for any pets and children on the day of your surgery. Also, make arrangements at work and/or at school. You will be out of commission for at least a day once you return home.

Make sure you have recruited a loved one to drive you home after the surgery. You will be unable to drive yourself.

At Boise Oral Surgery and Dental Implant Center, we walk you through the pre-operative instructions prior to your surgery day. Leading up to your oral surgery you’ll receive email reminders and videos dedicated to helping guide you through the procedure.

Day of Surgery

Wisdom Teeth extraction typically takes about 45 minutes to an hour and a half to complete, depending on your specific situation.

You will not feel any pain because you will be under anesthesia. During your initial assessment, your oral surgeon may give you the opportunity to choose the type of anesthesia you prefer based on recommendations for your case.

Once the area around your wisdom teeth is numb, your surgeon will cut through the surrounding tissue and bone in order to pull the wisdom teeth out. Wisdom teeth grow directly out of the jawbone so this procedure is a bit more intense than a regular tooth extraction.

Your surgeon will then thoroughly clean the now-empty socket and then stitch up the incisions so the gums can heal.

You will feel quite groggy as you come out of anesthesia and will need to allow time to recover in the office. There will be swelling, pain, and some blood in your mouth. Before you leave, the surgeon will advise you on pain management and home care.

Make sure your ride is ready to go when you are done. You will not be able to drive for a while after anesthesia. Take it easy once you get home. Expect to sleep for a lot of the first day. Dr. Bobst and the team at Boise Oral Surgery will supply you with post-operative instructions, that will enable you to a safe and speedy recovery.
